Black Bean Hummus is one of my favorite Daniel Fast recipes. Plus, it’s easy to make and costs a fraction of what prepared hummus costs in the grocery store or deli. A great feature of this recipe is that no oil is required! That’s a huge calorie cutter and cost cutting benefit.
I like to cut up a bunch of colorful and crunchy vegetables, including carrots, celery, jicama, green and red bell peppers, and cucumber. I arrange them on a platter and then serve with the black bean hummus. I can almost hear the cheers my body is declaring as I feed it such nourishing good!
Black Bean Hummus
Ingredients
1 clove garlic (optional)
1 (16 ounce) can black beans, drained (reserve liquid)
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1-2 tablespoons tahini
1 teaspoon ground cumin
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
Directions
1. Crush garlic clove and place in food processor
2. Add black beans, lemon juice, tahini, cumin salt and cayenne pepper into a food processor; process until smooth
3. Add enough of the reserved liquid (1 tablespoon at a time) from the beans to reach desired consistency, pulsing after each addition.
4. Serve with sliced vegetables including carrots, bell peppers, cucumber, celery and jicama.
Yield: Serves 8

Are any store bought hummus products allowed? What typical hummus ingredients am I looking to avoid?
AnOther food question that is probably redundant so forgive me, is cornbread allowed if not made with dairy?
No, since it would have leavening, right? I’m not sure of the recipe you are using, but no raised breads on the Daniel Fast.
Dear Susan,
I just realized today that the Daniel Fast is starting in a couple of days, which doesn’t leave much time to prepare, but I’m finding your website, book, and the webinar very helpful in jumpstarting me. This year I want to think more about the purpose and focus of the fast so it will be more meaningful.
With this being said, I have a food question! Many of your recipes call for black beans, white beans, pinto beans, and canned diced tomatoes , which I love. However, I notice that there is the ingredient calcium chloride in them. Is calcium chloride an acceptable ingredient, or do you buy organic canned veggies?
Are coconut aminos ok? Balsamic, red wine or white wine vinegars for salad dressing? Apple Cider vinegar? Any vinegars? Nutritional yeast instead of cheese? Hot sauce? Sorry didn’t see anything like this referred to…
Yes, all the above are allowed.
Do you have the book? The Kindle edition is on sale right now for just $2.99! Daniel Fast by Susan Gregory
Susan. I am excited I listen to your video preparation for Daniel Fast. I will prepare begin tomorrow Feb. 6th and begin my fast Monday 14th. This video is very helpful.
Thank you.
Pllease sent me the list of rhe foots i need to eat
Hi Elizabeth,
If you’ve joined our list then you received the list. You can also visit http://danielfast.wordpress.com which is our other site. You can learn a lot there.
Can I take vitamins and whole food protein powders during the fast? I am vegan and use the protein powder as a protein supplement, it is made with only pumpkin powder. Please let me know.
Yes, if it’s unsweetened and free of chemicals.
Be blessed.
What do you put the oven on for the fritatta recipe?
For the red bean soup recipe I am using canned beans so I’m wondering do I still need to simmer for the 1 1/2 hours? Or is that for flavor not for softening the beans?
Cook as you believe is needed. Sometimes I cook soups and stews using canned beans for as little as 20 minutes (my “fast” fasting food) 🙂
Be blessed
Black bean hummus is great with baked tostito™ chips (new addition this year)
Dear Susan
Thank you for your commitment to helping christians embrace the Daniel fast concept. I will start the fast tomorrow and this will be my first. Perhaps, these questions have been raised with you before in which case I unreservedly tender my apologies. Your responses would be helpful:
What clock times synchronise with Sunrise and sunset?
Would coconut oil and palm oil be acceptable as one of the pure oils allowed for the fast?
Are noodles allowed?
One of the video demonstrations of food recipes for the fast appears to endorse eating uncooked but soaked oats? Have I understood this correctly?
Lastly, I tried to log into your Facebook page for the fast starting tomorrow, but was unable to join. I was rather told that page was no longer available. Have other participants teported this problem or is it peculiar to me?
Hi Ijeoma,
Here are the answers to your questions:
What clock times synchronize with Sunrise and sunset? Use the clock in your area. For me, sunrise is at 7:46 Pacific Time. I will wait until the last day of the fast to find out sunset on that day.
Would coconut oil and palm oil be acceptable as one of the pure oils allowed for the fast? Yes, these oils are acceptable. All healthy oils can be used.
Are noodles allowed? Noodles that are made from whole grains and are free of chemicals are allowed on the Daniel Fast.
One of the video demonstrations of food recipes for the fast appears to endorse eating uncooked but soaked oats? Have I understood this correctly? All whole grains are allowed on the Daniel Fast. They do not have to be uncooked. One of the best breakfasts for the fast is cooked oats with fresh or dried fruit and unsweetened plant-based milk. By the way, there is a lot of erroneous information “out there” about the Daniel Fast. I am shocked and saddened by a lot that I see. So be warned.
Lastly, I tried to log into your Facebook page for the fast starting tomorrow, but was unable to join. I was rather told that page was no longer available. Have other participants reported this problem or is it peculiar to me? The link seems to be working. Please try the link below:

Hi Susan which kinds of snacks is required
I snack on nuts, fruit, cut veggies and simple foods. Not required, but it’s good to have snacks on hand to eat in times when you feel hungry between meals.
I don’t know if this had been asked or not but during the fast, is it also a social media fast? And I’m married so is this refraining from relations?
Some married couples choose to refrain from relations during the fast, which is a powerful way to show love in different ways. It’s to be agreed upon by both parties with no pressure.
Biblical fasting is always about restricting food for a spiritual purpose. However, many people also abstain from social media, television or other distractions during the fast. It’s a personal choice.
can i just do a liquid fast , using some protein smoothee , using soy milk
Yes, Rosie. That would be another method of fasting. Not the Daniel Fast. But that’s ok.
Susan,
I am excited to start 2017 with the Daniel Fast and strengthen my relationship with my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Where can I find some additional recipes for the Fast? Thank you for your ministry, Susan. Many Blessings to you and your family in 2017!
Cristina
